12.12 - 15.12 Geminids

Geminids meteor shower provided a lot of tiny pings and some longer ones. Longest was +2 minutes. Althought the peak was on the 14th around 11 UTC, the most usable (long ones) pings were in the nights. The effect of repositioning the antenna (due strong homeland tropo) was that almost no east European pings heard this time. Instead those, a lot of Norwegian and Swedish and BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal peaks. Nan Gaidheal has 150 kw so it was expected, but no luck/id althought it was a regular visitor.

17.10 - 23.10 Lapland Pedition

Savux4 Pedition took place between 17th and 24th October. There were good conditions in a couple of times during that week. Mostly it was NA east coast conditions in the middle of the week until sun hit back at the end of week. During that turbulence there were couple of interesting peaks from east cost and in the afernoons from Philippines. Due the work schedules log is jammed in somewhere.

15.-16. 8. Swedish tropo continued - The end of pedition

Nice tropo continued towards Sweden until was the time to pack home from Utö.

Weather was fine during the whole week, as usual here. Radio conditions were ok, small ES on one day, but good meteor scatter almost all the time and very good tropo to Stockholm area and Klaipeda, pity it just stopped near the cost. Some problems with gear and the over all disturbance with the cottage, some directions were impossible for the roof antenna. Quite heavy wind had a say when selecting favorable direction for the antenna.

1.6.2010 - Mega ES all over Europe

This was the best ES happening ever, here. It started with unidentified Italians at 15.00 but turned quick to Istanbul and Turkey mixed with occasional Greek and Balkan stations. Then from 17 there was some French influence. One hour later there was short Benelux skip, which was spread a while to UK. Whole show was in the package 7½ hours later!

100th North American QSL

Just received my 100th verification from NA and what is more appropriate than it's being CJRB Boissevain MB 1220 AM a Golden West Radio station. Thanks for very friedly doc! CJRB can be heard here in regular basis in Winter time, this time it was heard in SAVUX3 pedition in quite clear channel.

NA QSLs can be found from here: Na Qsl.

The Quadrantids meteor shower

It's been kind of dry meteor shower season for the last half year. There has been generally good conditions to the Americas, which is good for AM and bad for FM activities. There has been some technical failures and there has been software failures. Perhaps some unluck too with the chosen frequencies and timings. Today I fixed Total Redorder file, which got corrupted on the 5th January.

The Quadrantids meteor shower was not remarkable for the quantity of meteor scatters, there was quite low number of scatters compared to the Perseids. This time there were very lucky timings!

7.2-8.2.2010 SAVUX3 - Day 10 and closing down

There were Japan & Korea opening in the 7th day afternoon. In the night and morning there were general/weak east coast conditions with some south Americans. Nothing clear to log though.

What an interesting week it has been in Lapland. Those NA west coastish stations, which are reasonably rare to hear in south Finland are quite common in Lapland. These include KFI 640, KBOI 670, KFRC 1550, KWKW 1330, KCLK 1430 and several SD radios: KNWC 1270, WNAX 570 and not to forgetting Oregon: KXL 750, KEX 1190, KWOD 1390. Alaska (590,660,670,680,790,820,970,1140,1170) and Washington (950, 1000 of course, 1090, 1430, 1460, 1480, 1510) were strong almost every afternoon. The problem being here to avoid splatter from euro frequencies.

East cost NA DX was pretty much the same as in south Finland, mostly the same big ones, and also the rare ones. Highlight being here daytimer 1510 WRRD Waukesha WI with ESPN Deportes.

Memorable moments were first catchs from graveyards: CFFB Iqaluit NU, heard this also in south, which is no wonder because it was storming night after night. Other found graveyarders were:
1230: KKEE,
1240: KTIX, KDLR, WMMB,
1340: CFYK strong in afternoons
1400: -
1450: KONP
1490: -

It was good moments to be in openings to Hawaii, Mexico, China, Korea and Japan.

South Asia and Central/South America were lacking appropriate antenna, so there was not much effort to these directions.

Here is SAVUX3 log, currently on the fly status.
