14.12.2011 Geminids
This year Geminids-meteor shower proved to be very numerous but short/sharp pings. There were something going on 13th and 15th, but especially 15th was quite empty from pings, which was unlike last year with 3 equally good days. Longest ping was about 1½ minutes.

In 89.7 MHz looking for a patience, or Malta
One of the listening goals this year was to catch Malta, 3000km, with FM. Almost all the summer there was radio monitoring what's going on 89.7 MHz.
89.7 has one Maltese station and it's almost clear here from domestic or abroad usage. 3000km range seems to be quite optimal for double hops, I've got few in previous summers; Barcelona, Annaba, Tripoli. So that part is within the limits.
In finnish language Malta could be translated as patience. Patience would be needed as 89.7 might not be the right candidate for this task. There are slight finnish interference if inland tropo is enhanced. But the double hop place lies within Italy, which brings aloud stations of that region. Patience was not rewarded this season, but maybe in the next?

8.-9.11.2011 Åland
Center Finland tropo madness caused a trip to Åland for a clearer waves.
On the way I checked updated Hepburn picture with a shock, promised conditions seemed to vanish. Luckily that wasn't the case. To my relief there was something going on.

Late autumn Hepburn promised good conditions to South East. Virolahti was my target, with about 20 km to the border. There was amazingly different band with full Sankt Peterburg around. Also Estonia was well covered.

On the way from Norway I decided to pay a visit to Saana.
On the rigth: Intelligent wild life.
Saana
On the way up. At this point Körner didn't know what's up.
Finally there. But what is this whitey thing around?
Yep, it was cloud. Total listening session lasted almost two hours. There were non existent conditions to everywhere. Radio Kiruna was aloud and all the Norwegians had church broadcasting for the incident happened earlier in the summer. P4 was identified before that, nice.
And down we go. Seeing was limited to 10 meters.
11.8.2011 - 14.8.2011 Perseids Meteor Shower
For this years Perseids meteor shower antenna was turned to the west for Norwegians. While antenna was pointing to the west there were fewer pings than usual Perseids provides. But there are fever high power stations in the west than south. It was interesting to notice ping starting with Norwegian/Danish while it was turned to in English language at the end.

21.10.2011 JTK commenting:
The shift from Norwegian to English stations can be explained with the level of ionization: once the meteor hits, the level of ions is very high, and a short skip with a sharp reflection angle is possible. When the ionization gradually fades, the last man standing will be signals with the most obtuse (blunt) angle..
Meteors can bring a MUF up to 500 MHz. (My personal record is tv channel E26/ 511 MHz). Which means a very sharp short skip on FM. (My shortness record is YLE Kerimäki at 308 km).

10.6.2011 - Travelling day to Utö - All around Europe conditions in Central Finland
Central Finland got it's share of ES conditions. I had a couple of radios left for monitoring while moving to South and Utö.
ES conditions could be described as of a continuum of meteor showers; stations were aloud of 20 - 30 seconds at a time. Usually there was a 2-3 stations audible at the same time to make things better. After a brief look up on, at 106.9, languages detected were Danish, Dutch, English, French, German (with several dialects), Italian, Norwegian, Romanian, Russian and Serbian.
While Southern part of country enjoyed longer period of British Isles, here was just a brief visit there. At that time ES dropped a visit Denmark, Norway and Holland.

Small periods for an hour to Bari in the lower band was the this days achievement. Hrvatska was visited in the same time.

Lower band was open to Bari in the afternoon and in the evening band was open up to 108.
Highlights were:
- San Marino 102.7, a new country for me, tnx JMN for pointing this!
- Radio Esmeralda
- North African break, with several frequencies open, at the moment all are unids.
- A short Spanish break at the end.
- A lot of Italian booming with the fullspeed.
... at the same time elsewhere. While enjoying in the Utö my best ever Italy catering, there was few equipments left for monitoring in the central Finland. Previous days left very little for few clicks norther (300km +). 24th & 25th few bursts here and there, but 26th was much better. While in Utö conditions changed to the South, Bari. Kuuhankavesi region enjoyed Northern part of Italy.

For the second day in a row Utö8 has the ES. This time it was booming lower band in to places Izmir, Antalaya and Istanbul, from Greece side it might be Rhodos along with other places. Italy was availably on few ½ minute occasions. Turkish network stations have a nice habit of showing the location with RDS, which helped a lot cathing and identifying stations. But the nature of conditions was fast fading and hopping between those places.

20.3.2011 - 26.3.2011 Lapland pedition
Savukoski pedition will take place in the next week. 300 (1km) and 330 (700m) degree beverages are already there and at least one more will be placed. Haven't been in pedition so late in the spring in the north so not sure what to expect.
8.3.2011 Radio Nord Revival 6060 khz
50 years jubileum transmission with 10 kW heard here in Hankasalmi from Sala, Sweden. Actually transmission was forked with Tecsun PL-380, which had it's telescope antenna removed. Signal was clear and audible for a quite long time and without noise. Later in the evening in Jyväskylä there was equal strength russian station audible as well. It was interesting program to follow!

Africa on FM - Al Shababiyah FM
Heard on May 2010, not identified on then until now March 2011 when Samir Elahcene checked the clip. With my Arabic skills this had been mission impossible. This skip is now my record with 3421 km.
It seems from the picture attached that there could have been bounce on the Hungarian ground (near Gyor, 1700km), luckily there was no transmitter at that spot. Also ES clouds must have been above Lithuania/Kaliningrad and South Italy (Parco Nazionale del Ciento e Vallo Di Diano to be precise). Another thing which made this possible was a clear channel on 88.8 MHz. Classic FM Jämsä, 87 km to SW from here, ceased transmission 2009 and Summer Festival station in summer 2010 had not yet started.
One interesting point is that there were no other stations logged on that day. This seems similar occasion as Annaba FM from Algeria later that good summer in this same frequency, it was also only station heard at that time.
And the station itself: mp3

Utö7 signal distribution
Picture shows how and where from the signals travel to Utö:
- Yellow - Utö island
- Blue - tropo, mainly for coasts
- Green - meteors
- Red - ES propagation
There where couple of new meteor countries to me; Belgium, Austria, Italy and Serbia.
Maps shows clearly why UK meteors are quite rare in the Center Finland, best transmission location is in the North Sea.

4.1.2011 - Quadrantids
This years Quadrantids proved to be a challengin beast. Local max was here about 5 - 6 UTC. There were a lot of pings but those were dreadfully short ones. In the evening though pings were fewer but longer.
